First IT test and certification centre established on Gold Coast

Technology firm Mercury IT has filled a major gap in the Gold Coast’s IT education capabilities by establishing the city’s first testing facility for a range of technical qualifications.

All online IT certification testing is provided by one of two companies: Peason Vue or Prometric.
In order for a qualification from one of these tests to be valid, they need to be carried out in a strict testing environment with a highly restricted internet connection and video surveillance.
As it stands, a service like this does not exist on the Gold Coast.

Mercury IT director Luke Halliday says the new testing facility will fill a much needed gap in the city’s technology industry.

“Currently anyone looking to get an industry certification is required to sit an exam at one of the two major test providers, which means either attending a centre in Brisbane or going as far north as Rockhampton,” Mr Halliday says.

“What’s more, at the moment the waiting list to sit such a test is around three months, which is a long period to have to wait before being able to receive a qualification.
“There is a burgeoning technology industry in this city, and we believe this is a move in the right direction to supporting that industry.

The current testing facility is a part of the Mercury IT’s existing offices, however, they intend to expand into a new commercial building to extend on this offering in the coming months.
The new premises would act as a fully self-contained IT education unit with both learning and testing centres, with the directors of Mercury IT anticipating rapid expansion due to the high demand within the industry.

Mr Halliday says the service forms a part of the company’s push to help build the industry on the Gold Coast.

“To me, this is the next logical step as we build the quality of IT services in this city,” Mr Halliday says.

“We have many capable IT technicians here, and this new testing centre will provide them with a simple way to update or extend their skill sets.

“It would be a shame if the Gold Coast started to lose some of these technicians due to a perceived lack of opportunities—this is why I believe what we’re doing is so important.

“These testing centres are so few and far between that it’s likely we’ll see students and professionals alike travelling from Brisbane in order to get their certification completed more quickly.”

In 2010 Mercury IT came fifth in the CRN Fast50 IT industry awards for the fastest growing IT service companies in Australia after growing organically on a purely referral basis over six years in business.
